Abstract
A study was conducted of carcass traits and meal quality of pigs to evaluate the effect of inclusion of levels of soya bean oil in a diet constituted by sugar cane molasses type B given ad libitum and a supplement composed of soybean meal, vitamins and minerals (NUPROVIM, average protein consumption, 360 g/day). A total of 24 Large White x Landrace castrate male pigs allotted at random to three treatments (0, 1.5 and 2.3 soya bean oil in diet, in natura). The animals were fed these diets from 20 to 95 kg live weight, approximately. There were significant differences (P0.05) for backfat thickness (21.5, 21.7 and 17.9 cm respectively). There were not significant differences amongst treatments for the other carcass traits. There were not significant differences neither for final pH, humidity, free fat and water holding capacity of meat samples. The inclusion of soya bean oil in diets formulated to contain sugar cane molasses type B and NUPROVIM, at least until the level assayed in this experiment, only appears to influence backfat thickness of the animals, without any other influence in carcass traits and meat quality of pigs.
