Abstract
Mating behaviour and semen quality were evaluated in 15 young, seven month-old boars weighing 100 kg which were using in a terminal paternal (L35xD, L35xCC21 and CC21) crossing program. The animals were trained every two days during one month for semen extraction by a mannequin aid. A total of 3, 4 and 5 out of five L35xD, L35xCC21 and CC21 boars were adapted to the mannequin respectively, and then the others were discarded. Semen evaluation was conducted in samples obtained from six extractions during four months per boar. Means from semen evaluation were in the same order: motility, 77.1, 76.1 and 77.0%; volumen, 156, 308 and 223 mL (best in L35xCC21 boars; P0.001), concentration, least (P0.05) in L35xCC21 (353. 240 and 385 cells x 10-6/mL). The number of doses per ejaculated was highest in CC21 boars (9.7, 13.5 and 15.8). Cell resistance up to 24, 48 and 72 hr postdilution, was better in CC21 (63.2, 50.4 and 39.2%) as compared to L35xD (51.9, 45.8 and 26.7%), and L35xCC21 boars (59.7, 46.0 and 31.8%). The percentage of pathologies found was low and significantly lower in CC 21 (4.57%), than in L35xD and L35xCC21 boars (7.25 and 8.40%) Although the superiority of the tested CC21 and L35xCC21 boars was evident, the overall performance of all animals was good, and therefore its inclusion in the program of breeding crossing in the country is admissible.
