Abstract
The chemical composition of 48 representative samples from processed pig's slaughter house residues or offal from a slaughter house in Havana City was examined. The samples were from batch obtained daily and then mixed proportionally to obtain a threeday pooled sample. Sampling was carried out during the first five months of operation of the slaughter house (from February to June 1999) and the effect of month of sampling on several chemical indices was studied. A not significant effect of months on DM, N and sodium concentration was found. The ash and calcium content of the residues showed a significant (P0.01) effect of month and a trend was encountered (P0.10) of magnesium, potassium and phosphorous to vary according to the month of sampling. This significant effect of months could be due to the low variability observed amongst samples. It is possible that this effect should be of negligible nutritional importance if any. Overall, the average DM content of the examined product was 27.36 ± 1.49%, and in dry basis, crude protein (Nx6.25), 48.63 ± 1.00; calcium, 1.24 ± 0.90 and phosphorous, 0.75 ± 0.02% respectively. It was found a high in vitro (pepsin/pancreatin) digestibility of N in RPM samples (93.7%). It is suggested that the processed pigs slaughter house residues can be a protein and mineral source, and it is probable that the same holds true for energy, if used for feeding pigs in Cuba, besides the positive impact of the environment that it could be done.
