Abstract
A random block design was employed in a balance trial to study the effect of biotransformation by house fly larvae on the nutritive value of wheat bran in diets for growing pigs. Treatments consisted of intact wheat bran (A), and biotransformed wheat bran, either in fresh state (B), or dry, unmilled (C) and dry, milled product given to 32 hybrid, castrate male pigs of 40 kg live weight and fed diets based on sugar cane high-test molasses and torula yeast (0.1 kg DM/kg0.75 per day). The diets were isonitrogenous (approximately 20% crude protein in dry basis) and 40% of the dietary crude protein was from the wheat bran. Organic matter digestibility was significantly lowest (P0.001) in diets containing dry milled biotransformed wheat bran (A 85.6, B 82.6, C 80.8, D 82.5 % respectively). The same results (P0.05) were found in N digestibility (A 80.3, B 71.0, C 72.6, D 76.9% respectively). Similarly, there was an evident treatment effect (P0.05) on N retention, expresed either as percentage of intake or percentage of digestion.. It is suggested that diet digestibility and N balance can be strongly influenced by the method of processing the biotransformed wheat bran to be included in diets for pigs. It is possible that biotransformation of or poor quality substrate as compared to wheat bran could be a research line of practical interest.
