Abstract
Thirty two YxD male castrate pigs 22 kg live weight were used in a factorial arrangement 2x2 according to a random block design to study the fattening response to diets based on enriched sugar cane molasses and soybean meal. The studied factors were the inclusion of fresh carob tree (Albizia lebbeck) forage and the protein level in the ration.A significant (P0.05) interaction was only found for protein conversion. Pigs fed low levels of protein had a significant (P0.05) decrease of DM intake. As a onsequence, there was no treatment effect on DM conversion but a significant effect was observed (P0.001) in protein conversion. DM intake and DM conversion were lower IP0.001) in animals consuming carob tree forage but the reversal was true for protein conversion. The use of carob tree forage in pigs fed on sugar cane molasses and soybean meal in a comercial scale are recommended. Furthermore, it is suggested to take into account the possibility of reduction of daily protein allowance in this feeding system.
