Abstract
Specialized methods controlling pig reproductive performance are indispensable to assess the demands of current intensive pig production. The use of biological and technological methods meets these requirements. Exogenous hormones utilization to synchronize and induce estrus in sows and gilts and of other stimulators to induce farrowing are examples of these techniques. The objective of this thesis was to evaluate the information from six experiments, four of them related to ovulation in weaning sows induced with 1000 IU of PMSG (pregnant mare serum gonadotropin) and gilts conveniently synchronized. The adequate dose of PMSG when inducing heat and of the quality of this Cuban hormone as compared to its similar of commercial origin from Netherlands was also investigated. There were also two experiments carried out to induce farrowing with a prostaglandins analogous and to study its effects on offprings. The results of these works indicated that the ovulation of sows occurs from 28 to 40 hours after the beginning of the standing reflex. This same index occurred in gilts from 26 to 36 hours. The use of 1000 UI of PMSG in sows after weaning, improved pig reproductive behavior. The Cuban PMSG was of good quality, similar to the one imported. The analogous can prostaglandins analogous can synchronize and induce farrowings, therefore reducing animal births during the night and weekends
