With the aim of analyzing the correlations between the most important traits of the reproductive potential, data were taken from 198 purebred Yorkshire (YY), Duroc (DD), Hampshire (HH) and Creole (CR) gilts and from crossbred Yorkshire x Landrace (YL), Yorkshire x Duroc (YD) and Duroc x Hampshire (DH) gilts slaughtered at 30 days of gestation. Means and correlation coefficients were determined independently for each genotype. The effect of ovarian weitht (OW) on ovulation rate (OR) and the effect of OR and trait weight (TW) on the number of embryos (NE) or embryonie mortality (EM) were analyzed . There were positive and significant (P0.05) correlations between OW and OR in YY, DD, CR and YL gilts. Also there were high correlations (P0.05) between OR or TW and NE. Also there was an important negative correlation (P0.01) between TW and EM. There was a positive and significant (P0.05) correlation between OR and EM in YY and YL gilts that are the most productive gilts. It is concluded the if the weight of reproductive tract increases the numbers of embryos also increases with a smaller embryonic mortality. We recommended the use of sows with a higher reproductive tract in order to have a higher number of embryos and a higher litter size at birth.
