Abstract
On field performance traits of 380 Criollo young boars and gilts from San Pedro genetic centre were evaluated. The animals were born between August 1994 and July 1995. They were sons of 16 sires and 92 dams and they were mantained in conditions of management of a genetic center incluiding a cereal diet feeding. Data were analysed by means of a least squares method with a model incluiding the effects of sex, line, family and season. Season was considered as a three consecutive month period of birth. Least squares means were 230 days, 73.7 kg and 18.46 mm for age, weight and backfat thickness respectively. There were no significant differences between sexs in growth, but males had a lower backfat (P0.01). Line, family and season significantly affected performance. General means for weigh for age of 323 g and for average daily gains of 348 g confirm the low growth potential of this type of swine. The results also indicate a high potential for fat deposition.
