Abstract
In order to evaluate sperm quality and head anomalies of boar semen maintained with a new diluent from 0 to 96 hours in a cool room between 17-22oc, 93 eyaculates were used from different boars. Sperm motility (%), head anomalies (%) and % of eyaculates with 50% or lower motility were determined. Least squares method with a model including hours (0, 24, 48, 72 and 96) as only source of variation was used. Also regression coefficents of variables on time were calculated. There were highly significant differences between hours (P0.001). Motility decreased 8.04% and head anomalies increased 2.02% every 24 hours. Means for motility and head anomalies for 0, 24, 72 and 96 hours were respectively 74.9; 69.7; 63.5; 55.3 and 41.9 and 4.7; 6.3; 8.4; 10.4 and 12.8%. Only 8.6% of eyalulates had 50% or lower motility at 72 hours. At 96 hours this figure was 70.9%. It is concluded that semen maintained with this diluent can be used satisfactorily within a period of 72 hours of conservation.
