Abstract
A report is made on some reproductive indices obtained through the management of the Group of Pig Production, which managed 14 pig enterprise in the country, and two joined entities: the National Enterprise of Pig Genetics, which is concerned with the Cuban genetic centres, and the Swine Research Institute. The Group of Pig Production operated through 94 pig farms through out the entire country. The following indicators were evaluated: farrowings/sow, piglets/farrowing, numeric productivity and economic effectiveness. A conventional division of pig enterprises was made according to their geographical localization: four from the west, four from the centre and six from the east of Cuba. It was found that the greater herd of sows (47 211 animals) was concentrated in the specialized pig enterprises (72.4%), whereas private pig producers had a herd of 17 923 animals (27.6%). There were no significant differences (P0.05) among regions in the evaluated indices. It was considered that the projection of reproductive management for 2007 should be directed to the improvement of reproductive indices, and overall, go in deep in those aspects related to sow replacement, house comfort, herd management, technical and professional training, and alimentary stabilization.
