Abstract
The pattern of feed intake was determined in 4 female pigs of 25 kg liveweight according to a 4x4 Latin square design the diet was formulated to contain D-glucose and torula yeast plus vitamins and mineral (63:35:2, dry basis) and was offered as meal DM, 96.0% to the animals at 9:00 a.m. (average temperature, 23.5°C) either at A, 0.052; B, 0.112; C, 0.154 or D, 0.194 kg DM/kg0.75 respectively. There was no significant treatment effect on mean meal size (on average, 85.2 g) or mean length of time eating (on average, 4.2 min) during the first 2 hr after initiation of feeding by the pigs. Frequency of feed consumption significantly (P0.05) increased as the amount of feed offered increased (A, 7.3; B, 11.8; C, 13.0 and D, 14.1 respectively) and in parallel, time spent eating tended (P0.10) to increase (A, 38.8; B, 44.0; C, 46.0 and D, 55.5 min respectively). It is suggested that in the pig the elevation of the level of feed intake may determine an increase in the frequency of feed consumed by the animals up to a limit value which must be related to the activation of the mechanism of satiety
