Factors limiting the sustainability in cattle production farms of the Cotorro Municipality  [2009]

The main factors affecting the sustainability of cattle production farms were identified through the characterization of twelve dairy farms of the "Antonio Maceo" Credits ad Services Cooperative of the Cotorro municipality from the Havana City province. Data were obtained by direct field observations and surveys. The limiting factors identified were: reduced diversity of species and products, use of inadequate management practices and resistance to the use of alternative methods depending on lesser inputs. Data processed by the multivariate analysis of main components showed that the size of the agricultural area of the farm, the stocking rate, the milk yield per hectare, school grade of the producer and the percentage of practices adopted for improving biodiversity, expressed 84.5% of the variability among farms.
