Abstract
It seems impossible to drive muskrats to extinction in central Europe, so the only benefit of control measures can be prevention or reduction of damage caused by borrowing activity. An analysed of trapping data from the State of Bremen was conducted to check whether trapping has any significant impact on muskrat population dynamics. Neither high trapping numbers nor a particular high trapping success in spring did influence the abundance dynamics of Ondatra zibethica. Density calculations demonstrated that the annual loss due to trapping was smaller than the number of naturally surplus individuals. An extensive population reduction as it is aimed for the current control measures can not be achieved in this way. A change of muskrat control strategy towards an exclusive protection of most sensitive areas is discussed
