Hull-less spring barley cultivar 'Kornelija' economic and grain biochemical characterization  [2015]

The intensive hull-less barley breeding work has produced the first practical results during last decade in Latvia. In 2011, the first in Latvia established hull-less barley cultivar 'Partridge' (Beinaroviča et al., 2014) was in included in the Latvian Catalogue of Plant Varieties. In 2013, breeders were handed over to the new hull-less barley cultivar 'Kornelija'. The aim of this article is to reflect the economic performance of this variety and results of grain quality evaluation. Hulless barley cultivar 'Kornelija' established in the State Stende Plant Breeding Institute. In four places of Latvia during two test years, the variety 'Kornelija' could yield from 3:01 t haE-1 to 5.24 t haE-1 (Stand, 2012) (Table 2.). Cultivar 'Kornelija' has high characteristic of α-tocopherol, total phenol content in grains and antiradical activity (Bleidere et al., 2013a; Bleidere et al., 2013b). In these studies variety also indicate high total protein (177 g kgE-1) and β-glucan (52 g kgE-1) content in grains.
