Abstract
To determine the performance of the litters of a herd and the variances and covariances amount litter traits of pigs in Nepal, data were obtained from the records of a total of 1387 piglets (147 litters) born to 59 sows and 7 boars and were analyzed using the analysis of variance employing the least square technique of fitting constants. The least square means and standard errors of litter size at birth (LSD), litter birth weight (LBW), litter size at weaning (LSW), percentage weaning based on total number of pigs born (PWT), litter weaning weight (LWW) and average weaning weight of pig were 9.435 plus or minus 0.272, 10.604 plus or minus 0.393, 6.907 plus or minus 0.328, 75.296 plus or minus 2.838, 47.026 plus or minus 5.055 and 6.626 plus or minus 0.347, respectively. The phenotypic variance for LSB, LBW, LSW, PWT, LWW and AWW were 6.046, 9.901, 5.663. 449.528, 388.602 and 3.640, respectively. The phenotypic covariance among most of the litter traits were comparable with those reported by Pham (1972). The genetic variance for LSB, LBW, LSW, PWT, LWW and AWW were 0.155, 0.355, 0.328, 25.741, 113.842 and 0.372, respectively. Very small estimates of genetic variances and covariances for LSB, LBW and LSW were indicative of a very limited progress that could be achieved through selection for these traits
