Combining ability of some traits in a seven parent diallel cross of selected maize (zea mays) populations  [1999]

A diallel cross was made among seven maize populations. The resulting 21 crosses and seven parents were evaluated in a main season of 1992. The study was undertaken (1) to determine synthesized maize populations for days to 50% silking, ear populations that could be used as suitable parents in breeding program. Mean squares due to entries and general combining ability (GCA) effects were highly significant (P0.01 ) for all traits. Specific combining ability (SCA) effects were not significant for ear and plant height. General combining ability (GCA) was higher than specific combining ability (SCA) indicating importance of additive genes in controlling all traits. Based on estimates of their general combining ability (GCA) effects Abobako and A-5ll were best parents for earliness, low ear placement and short plant height. Abobako is also appropriate parent for grain yield. KCB X Abobako and Bako composite X A-5ll were best combinations for earliness, low ear placement, short plant height and grain yield. Effective breeding methods through which these parents could be exploited are suggested.
