Ciguatoxin was extracted from a variety of fish species caught off Nei Tebaa Channel using a technique adopted by the Southern Fisheries Research Centre, Brisbane, Australia. Bioassay was done on 20 g mice. Moray eel-Gymnothorax sp. (rabono) was found most toxic. Surgeo fish-Ctenochaetus striatus (ribaroro) and parrot fish-Scarus spp. (ikabata) were toxic. Spotted cod-Epinephelus sp. (Kuau), b ...

Examination of medical records and interviews with fishermen and old people identified cases of ciguatera fish poisoning and species thought to be toxic. From 1982 to 1987 the number of cases of ciguatera increased to an incidence rate of over 300 cases per 100,000 people, more than three times the rate of any other Micronesian territory. After 1990, cases declined from 67 cases in 1990 to 28 ...

The impact of development on the biological and ecological environment of atolls is presented. Case histories of projects to build causeways and bridges in Kiribati illustrate the impact on marine communities and ecosystems. Future projects should employ efforts to minimise ecological and biological damage. This document is anecdotal and is being interpreted and related to scientific knowledge.

Ciguatera fish poisoning is a serious problem in Tuvalu particularly on Niutao and Funafuti. Interviews of fishermen and examination of medical records determined the species and location of toxic fishes in Tuvalu and the number of ciguatera poisonings. During the period 1989-1991 Niutao, Nanumea, Funafuti and Nukulaelae islands reported the highest number of cases with Niutao yielding the hig ...

The mangrove-lobster Thallassina anomala is one of the lesser-known human food resources of the Indo-West Pacific region although it is widely distributed throughout the region. With the exception of Fiji, it is probably not exploited as a source of food by man in the region. Difficulties associated with catching the animal have probably militated against the use of the mangrove-lobster as hum ...

The sixteen atolls of Kiribati were surveyed in late 1983 to investigate current levels of ciguatoxic fish poisoning. Interviews identified fish species considered toxic on each island. A modified algal sampling technique devised by Yasumoto estimated the density and distribution of the causative organism for ciguatera, G. toxicus. Examination of medical records showed the number of cases of p ...

Ciguatera fish poisoning is appearing in reef fish caught off Nauru. Interviews and examination of medical records revealed 18 and 21 cases of ciguatera poisoning for 1990 and 1991 respectively. The name of the consumed fish was mentioned in only a few cases. None of the records reported showed where the ciguatera infected fish was caught. Certain surgeon fish species (Acanthurus mata, Ctenoch ...

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of replacing maize with a mixture of cassava root and leaf meal (CRLM) on the performance of broiler chickens. In experiment one, CRLM replaced 50 or 100 of maize in the control diet. The CRLM was made by mixing three parts by weight of dried root meal with one part by weight of dried leaves. In experiment two, at the 100 percent level ...

Simulation of solar drying of copra

Maiava, M.T.G. [jan-apr1992]

Drying of copra in a short time is a great problem in the islands of the South Pacific. With a view to determine the appropriate type of dryer three experiments were conducted in the simulation of solar drying of copra using a simple passive direct solar cabinet dryer. In the first experiment, the operating characteristics, namely, air flow rate, temperature, humidity, driving pressure and hea ...
