Abstract :

The mycoflora of coffee beans in the Philippines were determined after harvest, after drying, and roasted coffee from retail markets. Twenty-six species from 14 genera were recovered. Aspergillus was prevalent with eight species such as Aspergillus chevalieri, A. flavus, A. fumigatus, A. japonicus, A. niger, A. ochraceus, A. restrictus, and A. terreus. Aspergillus niger dominated coffee at 52. ...

Abstract :

Among the multiple benefits and uses of remotely sensed satellite images, one of the most important has been its use in land use classification. In this study, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSD), an alternative and evolutionary approach was used to classify land use of multi-spectral satellite images. Two types of PSD-based classification approaches; a supervised and an unsupervised were implem ...

Abstract :

Results revealed that the characteristics of anemic pregnant women differed significantly from nonanemic pregnant women. Women in the advanced stage of pregnancy and multiparose women were more likely to become anemic. Anemia was prevalent among all pregnant woman regardless of economic status. It was a problem of both the poor and non-poor women. However, as the population becomes affluent, l ...

Abstract :

The durably blast resistant Chinese rice variety SanHuangZhan 2 (SHZ-2) was crossed to a blast susceptible variety NSIC RC 146 (PJ7) from the Philippines to acquire durable resistance. Selected resistant lines were advanced until BC2F2. Sixty-two SSR markers were identified as background markers and the candidate defense genes oxalate oxidase (OXO) and oxalate oxidase-like protein (OXLP) were ...

Abstract :

Cocosin, the 11S globulin of coconut, is the major storage protein that accumulates in the endosperm during seed development. This work describes the gene structure, derived amino acid sequence, structural homologies, and developmental expression profile of cocosin. Two full-length cocosin cDNA isoforms were isolated through the PCR cloning strategy coupled with 5' and 3' - RACE technologies. ...

Abstract :

The municipality of Infanta, Quezon [Philippines] was devastated by numerous landslides and flooding caused by successive typhoons (Unding, Violenta, Winnis and super typhoon Yoyong) in 2004 which resulted to damages to properties, infrastructure, agriculture and loss of lives. This study was conducted to develop a landslide susceptibility model based on the inter-relationships between this ge ...

Abstract :

Rice tungro disease (RTD) is the most damaging viral disease of rice in South and Southeast Asia. Severe symptoms are expressed when two viruses namely; Rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV) and Rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV) infect the plant. Rice plants singly infected with RTBV usually show mild yellow to orange discoloration of the leaf tips and stunting. In order to characterize host r ...

Abstract :

A study was conducted to determine the effects of B-galactomannanase supplementation of diets with high levels of copra meal on nutrient digestibility and performance of growing-finishing pigs. One hundred twenty pigs (Landrace x Large White x Duroc crossbreds) of similar age and weight were used in the study. Pigs were distributed to four treatment groups following a 2x2 factorial arrangement ...

Abstract :

The effects of increasing water deficit and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi inoculation on growth, yield and fruit quality of fresh market and processing tomato varieties were studied. At the start of fruit set, mycorrhizal uninoculated and inoculated tomato varieties were exposed to 0kPa, 50 kPa, 100 kPa and 200 kPa soil-water tension levels. Reduction in shoot biomass, fruit weight and total fr ...

Abstract :

Pot and field experiments were conducted from September 2008 to May 2009 at the University of the Philippines at Los Baños, College, Laguna, to determine the effect of exogenous kinetin (6-furfurylaminopurine) application at flowering stage on the grain filling and yield of PSB Rc28 (short-duration variety) and PSB Rc18 (medium-duration variety). Based on optimization set-up, kinetin concentra ...
