Breadfruit - a low energy requirement source of carbohydrate for the wet tropics [Artocarpus]
1981
Bowers, R.D.
Best planting densities of breadfruit are about 100 trees/ha. The fact that breadfruit does not require annual cultivation confers a considerable bonus in that the danger of soil erosion is much reduced. Further it provides 100% vegetative cover for the whole year and presents no ecological hazard. Fertiliser requirement is not known but could be expected to be modest. The chemical composition of breadfruit dried: 87,9% dry matter, 3,4 crude protein, 1,1 ether extract, 3,4 fibre and 77,6 MFE. It is suggested therefore that a research and development program on breadfruit should be started
