Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the United States. This article reviews the literature and includes a statewide survey of Michigan ophthalmologists and optometrists. The majority (75%) reported they currently recommend vitamin/mineral supplements for their patients with AMD. There is a cost/risk/benefit analysis as well as specific recommendations and implications for dietitians. Antioxidant nutrient supplementation (100% of the recommended dietary allowance) is recommended for those at risk for AMD
