Phloroglucinol (PG) was found to inhibit in vitro rooting of guava microcuttings. This inhibition was more striking when PG was used in combination with auxins, as it produced slow growing malformed roots. Naphthylacetic acid (NAA)-PG combination was found to be more inhibitory than IBA-PG combination and maximum inhibition was noted when PG was added in presence of both the auxins. Addition of 15 gl-1 sucrose to the medium increased the rooting percentage from 62 to 88, but further increase of sucrose up to 45 gl-1 could improve the root quality but not the rooting frequency. Comparatively less acidic (pH 5.5-6) medium showed better rooting than more acidic (pH 4.6-5) medium. Rooting percentage, number of roots per cutting and root quality were significantly improved by the shoots cultured at 25 deg. and 30 deg. C than those at 20 deg. C.
