Animal industry in Uganda is mainly based on animals that provide food for man i.e. livestock. It is felt that private veterinary medicine practice should be modelled according to systems employed in keeping these animals. The presence of animals, other than livestock such as dogs, cats etc. in rural and urban areas calls for the setting up of an adequate, improved and sustainable and privatized veterinary service. This would augment the existing veterinary services provided by goverment institutions. Various reasons for the existing inefficiency in the service are given as; declining resources available to government, inflation, poor pricing and marketing systems and low consumer purchasing power.
