Several diterpene phytoalexins, oryzalexines A, B, C, D, E, and S, and the flavone phytoalexin, sakuranetin, from blast-infected or UV-irradiated rice leaves were isolated and identified. Among these oryzalexins, oryzalexin D (3, 7-dihydroxy-sandaracopimaradiene) and oryzalexin E (3,9-dihydroxy-sandaracopimaradiene) show the highest antifungal activity and were produced from 3-hydroxy-sandaracopimaradiene by inducible cytochrome P-450 dependent monooxygenase(s). The sakuranetin synthesizing enzyme, naringenin 7-0-methyltransferase, was induced in the irradiated rice leaves. Consequently, sakuranetin did accumulate in the rice leaves. Because of the low antifungal activity of the precursors of these phytoalexins, naringenin and 3-hydroxy-sandaracopimaradiene, the conversion of these compounds to active phytoalexins by either cytochrome P-450 dependent monooxygenase(s) or naringenin 7-0-methyltransferase is very important for the dynamic defense mechanisn of the rice plant
