In the animal model the non-obese diabetic (NOD) mouse, casein is diabetogenic, whereas whey protein is not. The induction of diabetes by casein in the NOD mouse appears to be restricted to casein containing the A1 variant of beta-casein and possibly other variants of beta-casein which have a histidine at position 67 in the protein sequence. NOD mice fed A1 whole casein, but which also received naloxone in their drinking water, did not develop diabetes. Beta-casomorphin-7 which can only be released during digestion from those beta-casein variants containing His67 was inhibitory to immune cell function in NOD mice and prediabetic humans, but not in Swiss mice or normal humans.
