A total of 432 piglets from two Iberian pigs' extensive farms (A and B), were identified with different electronic identifiers and compared with conventional tag (CC). In farm A, after the first period of fattening, no tag losses were observed, and reading failures were only observed in CE HDX (5.3%); with respect to traceability, no statistical differences between the three types of identifiers were observed. In farm B, total losses plus electronic failures during the first fattening period raised up to 21.4%, 51.5% and 17.8% in CC, CE HDX and CE FDX respectively, while they were only 3.0% and 0% for injectable HDX and FDX transponders respectively. Thus, it appears that the best method is the use of injectable transponders (P0.05), although the great number of losses and failures in tags, specially in HDX, which where not found in the consulted bibliography, might be caused by manufacturing problems in the CE HDX ear tags used in farm B.
