Secale cereale var. multicaule is a biennial species of winter type which can be sown in autumn, spring and summer. It is suitable for growing in pure stands and in mixtures with annual leguminous plants. It was experimentally grown in pure stand and was compared with Lolium multiflorum var. westerwoldicum and Bromus secalinus, and the mixtures of these species with Trifolium alexandrinum, Trifolium resupinatum and Lotus ornitopodioides were also compared during two years experiments. The results of the experiment proved, that growing of these species from the family Poaceae is possible both in pure stands and in mixtures with above mentioned leguminous plants under the conditions of the Czech Republic. Secale cereale var. multicaule can also be used as pasture for wild fauna (deer), as a cover crop in establishment of grass-clover pasture or meadow mixtures and also as intercrop for green manuring. There is a risk of damage of Secale cereale var. multicaule stands by infestation with frit fly (Oscinella frit), especially if this species is grown after maize.
