Data characterising the transformation of economy occurring in the Czech Republic and some other Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC) between the years 1990-2000 were summarized and compared with those of the European Union members, the United States and Japan. The coefficients of transformation output and the relative specialisation ratios for high-technology commodities and high-value agricultural products are listed for different countries used in the study. We can conclude that the efficiency gap of the Czech economy and of the others CEEC studied increased in the first half of the nineties. The trends of the second half of the nineties are quite different. The gap in efficiency of foreign trade is slowly decreasing and the analysed transition economies overcame the weakest economies of the EU members.
