An experiment was conducted at the Mesewam nursery of the Forestry Research Institute of Ghana to examine the effect of cattle and poultry manure and NPK fertilizer on the growth performance of Tectona grandis LINN. F. seedlings. There were seven treatments with four replications and each replicate contained 25 plants. The treatments consisted of soil only (control. To): soil +45 and 90kg 15-15-15 NPK/ha (T1, T2); cattle manure: soil compost in 1:2 (T3), 1:4 ratio (T4); poultry manure: soil compost in 1:2 (T5) and 1:4 ratio (T6). One-month-old seedlings were pricked into polybags (Size 18 cm x 26cm) containing 2.5 kg growth medium (one seedlings per polybag). Three months after transplanting, seedlings were harvested and the number of leaves, collar diameter, shoot and root length and dry weight, roots/shoot ratio and sturdiness index determined. It was observed that except for number of leaves, growth media consisting of either cattle or poultry manure mixed with soil in the ratio 1:2 had a significantly better effect on growth (p=0.05) than all the other treatments. Similarly, a combination of cattle or poultry manure and soil was significantly superior to NPK fertilizer (45 and 90 kg/ha) or the control. Except for the root/shoot ratio, the NPK fertilizer had negligible effect over the control in all the parameters examined.
