The breeding strategy in chickpea could be to improve seed yield through selection for seed size and seeds/pod in a base population in which recombinants favouring both the component characters in desired direction are generated by either inter-se mating or by irradiation of the heterozygous population, or by both. Obviously the second approach could only be a supplement to the first rather than a substitute
