The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is an autonomous organisation under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India. Formerly known as Imperial Council of Agricultural Research, it was established on 16 July 1929 as a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 in pursuance of the report of the Royal Commission on Agriculture. The ICAR has its headquarters at New Delhi.

In order to probe into the mechanism of anthelmintic actions of ether and successive alcoholic extracts of seeds of Psoralea corylifolia and essential oil of leaves of Piper betle, their effects were studied on two enzyme systems taking rat brain as a model for Ascaridia galli. All the three test substances did not significantly inhibit cholinesterase activity at any of 0.5 mg, 1.0 mg and 2.0 mg dose, when studied by manometric technique. All three substances, however, significantly (P0.05) inhibited succinic dehydrogenase activity at 1.0 mg and 2.0 mg doses but not at 0.5 mg dose, when studied by colorimetric method. Possibility that the inhibition of succinic dehydrogenase activity could be one of the factors responsible for their anthelmintic action, has been discussed
