416 pluriparous rabbits were divided into 4 groups of 104 dams each and treated subcutaneously with 20 UI of PMSG or with 200 mcg of alfaprostol (PGF-alfa), 72 or 96 hours before artificial insemination. Two groups of 50 pregnant dams were treated on day 30 of gestation with alfaprostol or saline solution (control) in order to synchronize parturitions. The parameters concerning the fertility and new born viability were similar between alfaprostol and PMSG; as regards the treatment interval, alfaprostol gave better results after 72 hours whereas PMSG after 96 hours post-treatment. Good results were achieved for the synchronization of deliveries; all the dams treated with alfapostol on day 30 of pregnancy delivered 36 to 72 hours after treatment. The reproductive performances were similar or were better than those of untreated animals.
