The authors describe the aetiology, pathophysiology, clinical signs, diagnosis and therapy of equine chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. COPD is a complex allergic syndrome characterized by airway obstruction, chronic bronchitis, dyspnea, cough, nasal discharge, alveolar emphisema and finally broken wind and congestive heart failure. COPD is a disease of environment ascribed to pollution of the stable air by fungal spores from hay and straw.
