Ninety accessions of rice including Chinese common wild rice collected from eight provinces and land races of rice collected from lower and middle basins of Yangtze River, Southeast China, and Yunnan province as well as some commercial cultivars were analyzed by RAPD with 24 primer. Out of the 196 RAPD markers, 157 were polymorphic among the wild rice accessions, 144 polymorphic among the japonica accessions and 128 polymorphic among the indica accessions. A dendrogram and a scattered figure demonstrating indica-japonica and wild-cultivated differentiations among the 90 rice accessions analysed were constructed, based on RAPD data. The results indicated that Chinese common wild rice, indica rice and japonica rice could be clustered into three distinct groups. Chinese common wild rice was found to be slightly more closely related to the japonica type than the indica type. Specific RAPD markers of Chinese common wild rice, indica and japonica subspecies were identified
