Four different dietary fat sources, calcium soap of olive oil (CS), soybean meal rumen protected by a coating of palm oil calcium soap (PS), roasted whole soybean (WS) and roasted whole linseed (WL), were compared in diets fed to Italian Friesian cows by means of a 4 x 4 Latin square designed feeding experiment, in order to study the effect upon trans C18:1 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in milk fat. The results showed a better performance from CS than from fats of WS and WL in terms of trans C18:1 fatty acids (P0.01), but not in terms of CLA (P0.05). The WS diet promoted the highest content of C18:1 fatty acids (both cis and trans) and CLA. It is concluded that CS is to be looked at as a positive energy supplement, yet to be improved as a CLA promoting supplement
