Analysis of the sterol fraction on GC capillary columns with stationary phases of increased polarity splits the peak previously considered as campesterol in two. Separation is shown for a 25 mx0.32 mm i.d. column coated with LAP, a 33% phenylsilicone (MEGA), and a 100 mx0.25 mm i.d. CP Sil 88 column (Chrompack). Mass spectra of the two components were virtually equal. Relative retention times from literature suggested the component to be 22,23-dihydrobrassicasterol, i.e. the epimer of campesterol at the carbon atom C(24). Hydrogenation of brassicasterol from the unsaponifiable of rapeseed oil confirmed this designation. In sunflower, peanut, rapeseed, olive, and soybean oil, 30-40% of the peak previously assumed to be campesterol represents 22.23-dihydrobrassicasterol. In corn and castor oil it is 60-65 and 50 % respectively. Concentrations given in literature of campesterol refer to the sum of the two epimers in C(24). It is proposed to replace the designation campesterol by 24-methylcholesterol for a more correct definition of the material actually quantified. Presence of two epimers also rises the question whether the rate of dehydration during raffination is equal for both or whether their composition influences the ratio of stigmastadiene/24-methylcholestadiene (R1)
