We have raised a new Chinese monkshood cultivar, 'Tonemurasaki', at Gunma Agricultural Technology Center. Selection of 'Tonemurasaki' began in 1992 from among 700 natural-cross seedlings of 'Bacchus'. This was reduced to 27 lines in 1995, 6 lines in 1998, 3 lines in 2001, and finally 1 line in 2002. We applied for varietal registration, which was granted in 2004. The flowering is 12 days earlier than 'Bacchus'. There are many flowers, and the spike is long with excellent texture. The sepals are a pastel violet with a lighter center. Leaves and stalks contain no anthocyanin. Buds at the tip of the spike are uncolored. Plants grow quickly and are a little shorter than 'Bacchus'. Pinching reduces plant height.
