This book is a rare one, but the type that must be replicated in Kenya and elsewhere in the developing world. It provides empirical evidence assembled by researchers and planners from a wide range of disciplines. The evidence spans a long period from colonial times to the present era of district planning during which population, while imposing pressure on the land, neither degraded it nor precipitated precarious survival. It tells the story of environmental recovery in Machakos, a district in the dry plains south-east of Nairobi, a story about people who have all along conserved their land. The authors address issues that are pertinent in population, environment and technological sustainability. These include analysis of how Machakos has changed over time... There could be no better treatment of population, resources, environment, technology and development contained in a single readable volume. Reading this book sways a reader from the conventional interpretation of interrelated phenomena which researchers, national governments and international organizations have been preoccupied with at the expense of localized issues.
