Maize and bean yields in Matunda are low due to non-use or use of suboptimal amounts of inorganic fertilizers. Though farmers make and use compost, it is not enough to cover the whole farm Green manure legume were introduced because farmers can cover the whole farm without much difficult. Mucuna, soybeans, dolichos, crotolaria and cowpeas were planted in August 1997. They were incorporated in the field and maize and beans planted the following year using 30 kg N and 30kg n05. The combined use of green manure and half the recommended rate of inorganic fertilizets significantly increased maize (6 - 7 tons ha -1) compared to the farmers= practice (4.8 ha-l ).
