Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), naturally occurring substance in milk and meat of ruminant animals, exhibits chemoprotective effects in experimental animals. Mechanisms by which CLA inhibits prostate cancer cell growth were studied. MLL cells were cultured in serum-free medium with 0-40 μM CLA or linoleic acid, and viable cell numbers were estimated by MTT assay. CLA significantly decreased MLL cell growth dose-dependently, whereas linoleic acid had no effect.
