In 1988 forest monitoring network (grid size 4x4 km) including more than 960 permanent observation plots (POP) and more than 23 thou. sample trees was established in Lithuania. In 1992-1995 the number of POP and sample trees have been reduced. The mean defoliation of all species (22-24) has not been increasing during the past 2-3 years, whereas the significant defoliation increase (t-test has been used) was started in 1989-1991. Various tree species can be ranked according to the mean defoliation as follows (forest monitoring data, 1995): ash (Fraxinus excelsior)- mean defoliation 16.1, black alder (Alnus glutinosa)-17.4, birch (Betula sp.)- 20.5, grey alder (Almus incana)-22.9, aspen (Populus tremula)-23.6, Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris)- 24.0, oak (Quercus robur)-25.5, Norway spruce (Picea abies)-28.6.
