Conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) are a mixture of positional and geometric isomers of linoleic acid (LA) containing conjugated double bonds. It have been well known as having many diverse biological activities, including anti-carcinogenic, antioxidant, anti-atherosclerotic, anti-obesity, anti-diabetic and immune system enhancement. Therefore, this study was undertaken to investigate the free radical scavenging properties of(trans- 10, cis-12 and cis-9, trans-11) CLA isomers against the stable 2, 2-diphenyl-l-picryhydrazyl radical (DPPH) in ethanol by using an ELISA reader technique. The results showed that CLA directly reacted and quenched free DPPH radicals. Dose and time effects of CLA-DPPH reactions were observed without any lag phase. Additionally, the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of trans-10, cis-12 was higher than that of cis-9, transe-11 under same experimental condition. This study indicates that the beneficial health effects of CLA isomers my attributed to their radical scavenging properties.
