Different acclimatization methods were employed on sago palm (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) to reduce mortality of suckers harvested from the wild. Results showed that such acclimatization methods can reduce the high mortality rates observed among harvested sago palms. On roots, the surviving transplants first acclimatized in marsh soil had the most extensive roots. Suckers that survived rafting developed new roots that were longer than in other suckers. Partially excised suckers developed new roots that were longer than in other suckers. Partially excised suckers developed fewest and smallest new roots much later. Lysigenous type of aerenchyma formation in the root cortex was observed; however, there were differences noted between samples from the wild and from acclimatized suckers. The air spaces were larger and rows of intact cells were fewer in the root cortex of acclimatized suckers than those sampled directly from the wild. This reflects the anatomical response of the plant to its environment.
