Because of the occurrence of serious plant diseases, and because many farmers in the traditional banana growing regions in Uganda found that the crop was not profitable to grow, the development of a viable research programme was essential, and in this regard a provisional check-list of all the cultivars in the country is the right beginning. Hopefully, this work will continue until it culminates in the development of an identification key for the East African Highland banana cultivars.
