MILESTONES AND PRINCIPLES OF EVOLUTION OF WATER-SALT RELATIONSHIPS IN LIVING ORGANISMS  [2014]

The paper presents an attempt to revise author’s ideas about the causes of critical salinity, a phenomenon described earlier, in view of major recent breakthroughs in biology, including further substantiation of the “RNA world” concept and the recognition of an essential significance of potassium ions for nucleic acid functioning and of the role of sodium pump in animal evolution. It is hypothesized that the drastic environmental crisis that resulted from increasing sodium ion concentration in the environment of primordial life and promoted the emergence of the sodium pump as a means to extrude sodium ions from cells occurred when sodium level in the environment exceeded the critical range of 5–8‰. All modes of osmotic relationships in animals are aimed at keeping the internal salinity slightly above this critical range. A revised scheme of evolution of water-salt relationships in animals is suggested.
