The processes of desertification of agricultural landscapes are associated with the degradation of soil and are characterized by the dynamics of thermodynamic functions: Gibbs energy, enthalpy, entropy. The objects for research were the agroforest landscapes of the Volgograd region with southern chernozem and dark-chestnut soils. The researchers note the decrease in biological productivity of systems, soil fertility, use of photosynthetically active radiation and anthropogenic expended energy for higher yield and soil fertility reproduction. It was determined that the agroforest landscapes reach their structural functional optimum state by increasing enthalpy and decreasing flow of entropy in soil and forest stands. The results of research showed that the thickness of humus soil horizon within windbreaks was from 1.1 to 1.5 times as much than in the unsheltered ecotopes. The analysis of variance showed that the part of the influence of the situation of the agroforest landscape in the catena approximates with 40-70% of variance, and that of protective forestations – with 30-60%. The excess of average humus content in the soil horizon A+B1 within windbreaks compared to that of adjoining field, reaches 1.1-1.2. The humus component of enthalpy in the humus horizon within windbreaks is 1.2-1.5 times as higher than that in the field, and reaches its maximum in the watersheds. The decreasing entropy confirms the real soil ameliorative effectiveness of protective
forestations, and the degree of said decrease ascertains the effectiveness of agroforestry. The highest effectiveness of agroforestry was stated on the territory of watersheds. It was proved that the complicity of physiological and biochemical state of woody plants in forestations can be shown by a single thermodynamic function – the entropy of foliar system.
