This paper reviews the effects of Striga hermonthica on the host metabolic and physiological processes which often culminate in reduced crop yield. Against this background the limited success so far reached in the control of S. hermonthica is attributed to the socio-economic circumstances of many small scale farmers. Strategies for integrated management of striga in resource poor systems are suggested
