Abstract: Vagotomy is an alternative to complicated intestinal bypass surgery. Like intestinal bypass, vagotomy decreases food intake and alters feeding patterns in animals studied. However, vagotomy does not produce the unpleasant side effects of intestinal bypass. Vagotomies were performed on 5 patients. All experienced weight loss as a result. Minor complications such as wound infections and occasional diarrhea were reported. There was one episode of vomiting. Further study is required before it can be accepted as an alternative to intestinal bypass.
