Abstract: An intervention trial was carried out in 54 anemic preschool children consuming vegetarian diets, in which the effect of ascorbic acid (AA) supplementation in 27 of the children at lunch and dinner (100 mg/meal AA) on the regeneration of hemoglobin (Hb) was evaluated. A significant improvement in Hb level and red blood cell morphology was noted in AA-supplemented children relative to controls. Analysis of the vegetarian diets found them to be quite low in AA content.(wz)
