The National Agricultural Library is one of four national libraries of the United States, with locations in Beltsville, Maryland and Washington, D.C. It houses one of the world's largest and most accessible agricultural information collections and serves as the nexus for a national network of state land-grant and U.S. Department of Agriculture field libraries. This paper describes the philosophy and design incorporated into the construction and operation of cat buildings in a centre that houses both dogs' and cats in the most animal friendly conditions providing maximum environmental interest to the pet consistent with the requirements of nutritional and behavioural studies. The husbandry systems use best health care practices, with emphasis on canine or feline companionship and the human pet relationships.
