Because of the findings concerning the association of visceral fat and disease in Japanese American men, the present analysis was done in women to compare body fat and metabolic variables between subjects with diabetes and normal glucose tolerance. A similar analysis was performed in men. Data were then analyzed in a general linear model in order to address the contributions of intra-abdominal fat and of glucose intolerance to atherogenic risk in men and in women.
